SPENCER STALEY
Founder of The Good Mod
Danish inspiration, Portland quality. Spencer Staley has no formal training in designing or building furniture. He figured it out with a distinctly Portland-style passion. Staley’s The Good Mod is a 20,000 square-foot loft that serves as both showroom and workshop where innovative mid-century furniture is made and classic pieces are restored. “We have concrete floors in the studio and I’m on my feet all day, so I need the comfort that Danner provides,” says Staley.
Originally gravitating toward music and film, Staley discovered an interest in interior design and furniture working at a colorful used furniture shop. It was the mid-century Danish designs that caught his interest. Staley explains that he rolled the dice on his own store 13 years ago. Studying the flowing geometries and minimal ornamentation, he began crafting furniture himself and found the Portland community to be very supportive of his endeavor.
Today, The Good Mod’s design and production teams have created one-of-a-kind products for a long list of notable partners. Staley’s role in the business is still primarily hands-on, building furniture that he’s designed.
